285 illegal firearms taken off streets in 2018

Over the past seven and a half months, authorities have confiscated 187 guns in The Bahamas, according to Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) statistics.

Additionally, 2,054 rounds of ammunition have also been confiscated.

On Monday, authorities arrested three men for possession of a .9 mm pistol with eight rounds of ammunition.

Officers on patrol on Tonique Williams Darling Highway pulled over a silver Nissan Maxima after the occupants were observed acting in a suspicious manner, police said.

The men are expected to be charged this week.

Between January 1, 2018, and July 31, 2018, police seized 161 illegal firearms and 4,539 rounds of ammunition.

Last year, authorities removed a total of 285 illegal firearms off the streets and another 6,254 rounds of ammunition, according to data represented by the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

A breakdown of the weapons seized, include 206 pistols, 33 revolver, 16 rifles, 28 shotguns and two imitation weapons.
