More than 23 items on the national breadbasket list are tax-free as of today.

This exemption includes medication.

Despite the recent 4.5 per cent increase in value-added tax (VAT), the government said the tax-free items will hopefully produce a cheaper grocery bill for residents.

Several stores, however, have complained that the time frame to make the necessary inventory adjustments, was insufficient.

Meantime, government officials are said to be closely monitoring stores to guard against price gouging.

Prime minister Dr. Hubert Minnis also revealed that those employed with the Price Control Commission (PCC) will work undercover to ensure compliance.
