Man dies in hospital, another injured after double shooting
NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The fatal shooting of a man on Tuesday night has brought the country’s homicide count just one killing away from the total number recorded last year.
According to police, two men were on Ash Lane in Pinewood Gardens, near Mount Tabor Church, when a man shot them around 11 p.m.
The gunman, who was reportedly known to them, fled on foot.
Both men were transported to hospital, but one of the victims succumbed to his injuries a shortly while later.
The second victim was listed in stable condition.
There have been 90 murders for the year, according to Eyewitness News’ record, with 2018’s count capping at 91.
This year’s homicide count represents a 16 percent increase over the 77 murders recorded as of November 20, 2018.
Around the same time in November 2017, there were 117 murders.
The murder count of 90 observed in 2018 was the lowest in nine years.
There have been two murders this month so far.
The most recent killing occurred last Monday.
In that incident, police said a man and woman arrived at a resident on Ashley Close, off Hawk Ridge Road near Carmichael Road when a armed man began shooting at them before running away.
The man was shot multiple times.
He died in hospital.
The woman was not injured, according to police.
Minister of National Security Marvin Dames has said the goal was to have fewer than 90 murders this year.
Commissioner of Police Anthony Ferguson recently affirmed that his policing plan for 2019 has been performing.
However, Ferguson acknowledged challenges related to shootings and armed robberies, which continue to plague New Providence with almost daily occurrences.
