Mother of country’s first murder victim speaks out

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Still grieving and unable to come to grips with the death of her son, Rosalee Bain, the mother of the country’s first murder victim said she is disturbed by video footage circulating on social media of her son who died on New Year’s morning.

Just hours into the new year, 19-year-old Terrance Rolle, Jr was shot in the head off Market Street. Within minutes, video footage circulated on social media of Rolle, who was laying down and surrounded by a crowd of onlookers.

Bain said she was only comforted by the fact that others were praying over him, and she now hopes that others would remember her son as the humble young man that he was.

“He was a fun-loving person. He does whatever you told him, but like any other child he had ups and downs,” Bain admitted. “We had just discussed certain things, and he went to Junkanoo [on Tuesday morning] and, of course, never returned.”

Bain said that she was at work on Tuesday when she got the phone call that her son had died.

“I got the phone call from my other son, and I asked him why he kept calling my phone. My son told me that his brother had gotten headshot. I was in such shock, my coworkers had to ask me why I was still there.”

When Eyewitness News Online visited Bain’s home in Bain Town last night,  the mood was somber and scores of family members had gathered at the homestead to express their condolences and share fond memories of the deceased.

Police reported that Bain was walking with a group of men on Market Street near the C. R. Walker Senior High school when they were approached by a man armed with a handgun.

Police reported that the suspect opened fire on them before fleeing the area.

Rolle was taken to hospital where he died a short time later.

No one else was injured during the shooting.

Police have made no arrests and are asking anyone with information that can help with identifying and locating the suspect or suspects to come forward.

Investigations continue.
