A 40-year-old woman with a record of mental illness, is behind bars after surrendering to police and being charged with the killing of her one-year-old daughter last December.
Phillipa Arnette-Marshall stood before Magistrate Samuel McKinney Friday on allegations that she doused her child, Philicia Marshall, with gasoline and set her on fire.
Prosecutors told the magistrate that the woman claimed she was hearing voices.
The infant died in February of this year at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).
Marshall, who resides on Kemp Road, was released from Sandilands Rehabilitation Center (SRC) last week and arraigned on one count of manslaughter.
Bjorn Ferguson, Marshall’s lawyer, requested that Marshall not be placed in the Bahamas Department of Corrections after having previously spent 11 weeks in SRC.
The judge initially set bail at $15,000 with two sureties however, the prosecutor objected to the decision noting the seriousness of the crime.
Marshall will remain locked up pending a bail review by the Supreme Court.
She will be served a voluntary bill of indictment on May 14.
