Min. of Foreign Affairs cautions Bahamians amid alleged threats

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources issued a statement Friday afternoon, which addressed a voice note circulating on social media related to fishing in Bahamian waters.

The voice note claims that there are foreign entities that have made threats against the lives of Bahamians, specifically fishermen. The speaker indicated that there are links to Al Qaeda.

The ministry is urging all Bahamians to be cautious in their daily routine and report immediately to the authorities any suspicious activity.

The complete statement reads as follows:

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources are aware that there is a voice note circulating in social media related to fishing and the use of the ocean in the southeastern Bahamas, which claims that there are foreign entities that have made threats against the lives of Bahamians, specifically fishermen.  The speaker purportedly indicates that there are links to Al Qaeda.

The Bahamas takes seriously all threats on the lives of Bahamian citizens and their livelihood.  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has alerted the relevant authorities, locally and internationally, and is working with all concerned to address the alleged threats against Bahamian nationals.

The Ministry urges all Bahamians, in particular, those in the fishing sector, to exercise due care and caution in their daily routine and to report immediately to the authorities any events that appear to be suspicious.
