A 53-year-old man lost his life this weekend after he was struck by a car on Saturday evening, putting the traffic fatality to count at 40 for 2018.

According to police reports, shortly after 6:00 p.m., officers responded to a call about a traffic accident on Foster Street.

The victim had significant trauma to the head and body but was still alive.

Investigators said the man was transported to hospital by paramedics, where he died a short time later.

Investigations are ongoing.

The majority of traffic fatalities, according to Commissioner of Police Anthony Ferguson, are the result of speeding or drinking and driving.

As a result, law enforcement said it intends to beef up patrols and target nightclub patrons in an attempt to decrease the number of traffic accidents on New Providence Streets.

This is the first traffic fatality since the ill-fated Labour Day tragedy, which claimed the lives of four women back on June 1.
