Man killed in drive-by shooting on Ross Corner

Murder count one shy on being on par with 2018

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — A man was killed in a drive-by shooting on Ross Corner on Sunday night, police reported.

Authorities said two men were standing in front of a residence around 10 p.m. when the occupants of a white vehicle began shooting at them.

One of the men was shot. He died in hospital.

The motive for the shooting was unknown.

Police did not report any arrests in connection with the incident.

There have been 62 murders in The Bahamas for 2019, one shy of being on par with the murder count up to this time last year.

As of August 28, 2019, there were 63 murders.

Last year ended with 91 murders, the lowest on record since 2009 when 85 murders were recorded.

The murder on New Providence came on the heels of two weekend killings; one in Abaco and another in Eleuthera.

Officers responding to reports of gunshots on Breadfruit Street, Marsh Harbour around 3 a.m. Saturday found a man in a home with multiple gunshot wounds.

He died on scene. Another man was shot in the leg.

According to police, an armed man entered the home and shot the men.

Police also reported that a gunman approached three men sitting outside a residence in the James Cistern settlement around 9 p.m. and began shooting, killing one of them.

Speaking at the Free National Movement’s Women’s Association installation luncheon Sunday, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said his administration has reduced crime in the last two years in line with its mandate, but there is a long way to go.

He said the pain and suffering of victims should fuel a continued, relentless and aggressive front against crime.

“We promised to reduce crime,” the prime minister said.

“Though previous governments, including the last PLP government promised to reduce crime and murder, it is this FNM administration that has reduced crime over the last two years. But we still have more work to do to make The Bahamas safer and to secure a better future for all. The pain and suffering of the victims of crime must continue to propel us all to relentlessly and aggressively combat crime and violence.”
