Major optimistic about final bout

Just two weeks before his final professional fight, Meacher Major yesterday provided an update on his preparation ahead of his last match.

Major takes on Jamaican Martin Anderson on the “Last Dance” fight card, which is set for October 27 at the C.I. Gibson Gymnasium.

“Honestly this is the best I have ever felt before any fight in my career,” Major said.

“Right now, I’m five pounds away from my fighting weight, and there is still about two weeks to go before I get in the ring.

“Anyone that knows about having to cut weight for anything knows how hard that can be. It’s something that I’ve always struggled with and I’m glad about the progress I’ve made preparing up to this point. I just want to go out and put on a good show for the fight fans in my last match as a pro.

“Martin is an opponent I’ve defeated in the past, even though he said he suffered a hand injury during the fight. I don’t plan on taking him lightly, for the fact that I never underestimate an opponent.”

Major and Anderson first faced each other in April 2016 at the Caribbean Showdown, hosted at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. In a super featherweight main event, Major secured a second-round TKO.

The fight card has been endorsed by both the Bahamas Boxing Commission, the Pan American Caribbean Boxing Organization (PACBO) and the Bahamas Boxing Federation (BBF).

Chris Joy of I Fight Promotions has also come on board to help promote Major’s last match.

“We have some really talented boxers from Jamaica coming in that will really put on an entertaining show,” Joy said.

“We’re looking to bring more talent from Jamaica and the United States to compete locally and help Bahamian fighters gain the experience they need without having to travel.”

In his last bout, Major remained undefeated at home with a second-round stoppage over Roberto Acevedo of Puerto Rico in December 2016. Major improved to 23-6-1 with 18 KO’s.
