NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The 2018 National High School Volleyball Championships wrapped up on Saturday night at the Anatol Rodgers High School Gymnasium.
The Government High School Magic captured the senior boys title, defeating Agape Christian out of Abaco in two tightly contested sets: 25-21, 26-24.
Agape managed to salvage the night with a win in the senior girl’s division, repeating as champions. The Eagles beat the C.V. Bethel Stingrays in three sets to take home the gold. The Eagles won the first set 25-21, lost the second 20-25 and came back for the victory in the third, winning 15-12.
St. Georges high school defeated Patrick J. Bethel in three set to take bronze in the boys’ division. The Jaguars dropped the first set 20-25 and won the next two 25-14 and 15-6 respectively.
St. John’s College senior girls beat Anatol Rodgers in two sets to take bronze in the division.
“Having these types of tournaments drastically enlarges the national team pool when it’s time to travel for international competition,” said senior education officer in the Ministry of Education Evon Wisdom, who also serves as the tournament’s organizer. “We are working hard to be as inclusive as possible in the future, in regards to Family Island teams. However, we want to maintain the quality of the competition. Volleyball is a very technical sport, and we need to make sure all of the teams competing are up to our standard.”
Organizations represented at the three-day tournament included the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association, Bahamas Scholastic Athletic Association and Grand Bahama Secondary Schools Athletic Associations.
