The Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) has now partnered with The Bahamas Agricultural Marine Science Institute (BAMSI) to add three more fruit-bearing trees to the airport’s greenspace.
Currently, the green space, which is comprised of a number of indigenous plants and a built-in bandstand for live shows, was created in 2011.
According to Nassau Airport Development (NAD) Company Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Vernice Walkine, the space remains the most used garden on the airport’s grounds.
Walkine, alongside the Minister of Agriculture Michael Pintard, planted a guava, avocado and citrus tree.
BAMSI Chairman Tennyson Wells noted that the same trees planted at LPIA are the exact lineup of trees currently being planted at the facility in Andros.
The Minister said the new fruit trees are not just for decorative purposes, but represent an important part of government’s food security plan.
