NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Arinthia Komolafe, the newly-elected leader of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA), said many are afraid to support the young party because they fear change in what has remained a ‘biased’ political system.
“They are fighting to keep us out because their contract will not be automatic, but under a DNA government, every Bahamian will have a fair chance. They fear a DNA government because we will take no prisoners in our quest to fight for our people,” Komolafe told delegates on Saturday night at the DNA’s convention at the Courtyard Mariott Hotel.
Arinthia Komolafe won the DNA’s leadership election last Friday night with a total of 64 votes.
Her competitor, Kendall Smith, received 14 votes.
Buscheme Ambrister was elected as the party’s deputy leader and Omar Smith was elected as the party’s Chairman.
According to Komolafe, the DNA has no allegiance to any special groups and will thus restore true democracy to The Bahamas.
Komolafe expressed that the DNA had the most innovative ideas during the 2017 general election and the party presented alternatives.
And as the party prepares for 2022, the DNA leader said the party will restore true meritocracy to The Bahamas. This, she said, is why many ‘special groups’ do not want to see the DNA get into office, because “the game will be over for them”.
Also giving his victory speech at Saturday’s convention was newly-elected Chairman of the party, Omar Smith, who ridiculed the current administration for wooing the Bahamian people for a vote during the election season, but not keeping their promises once elected.
“Two years into their administration they have still not bought into force the Freedom of Information Act. The Integrity Commission Bill has not been enacted, and we still do not have campaign finance registration,” Smith said.
“They have shown that they are just like the PLP. They continue to show the Bahamian people that they are two sides of the same coin.
“Let’s not forget the full accounting for their trips around the world. They promised to provide it for us on Dec 31st 2018, and where are we now,” Smith asked.
