Perez Knowles joins the ranks of Bahamian baseball players to sign a Major League Baseball (MLB) contract, after striking a deal with the Cincinnati Reds Monday.

Knowles, a native of Grand Bahama, became the second Bahamian pitcher to sign to the majors this month, after Chavez Fernander was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 35th round of the MLB Draft.

Knowles’ signing comes just weeks after he led the Columbus State Cougars to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II World Series.

In his final season as a Cougar, Knowles averaged a 3.05 ERA, had 11 wins, started 18 games and threw 161 strikeouts. In the Division II Championships, he pitched 5.2 innings and earned three strikeouts.

Knowles will be assigned to the Reds’ Double-A Affiliate in the upcoming weeks.
