Jonquel Jones and the Connecticut Sun took a 1-0 lead in their Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) semifinal series against the Los Angeles Sparks, picking up an 84-75 win on Tuesday night.
Jones had 16 points, seven points and two assists in the win. Alyssa Thomas led the way for the Sun with 22 points and 10 assists. Jasmine Thomas had 19 and Courtney Williams chipped in with 15.
After back-to-back years of heartbreak in the playoffs — Connecticut lost second-round, single-elimination games to the Phoenix Mercury in 2017 and 2018 — the Sun can take another step toward the finals when their series resumes Thursday at home (6:30 p.m.).
Candace Parker led Los Angeles with 24 points and Nneka Ogwumike scored 20. Chiney Ogwumike added 15 off the bench.
