Johnson set to face Munguia on October 30

NASSAU, BAHAMAS- Middleweight Tureano Johnson will take on Jaime Munguia on Friday October 30 at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.

In his most recent bout, Johnson had an impressive showing against the previously undefeated Jason Quigley last summer. Johnson was aggressive from the starting bell and was able to stop Quigley in the ninth round. He looks to keep his win-streak alive against the former WBO junior middleweight contender, who won the 154-pound title back in 2018 and defended it several times before moving up in weight.

“Thanks be to God for this opportunity. I’ve been watching the landscape of boxing for a while and noticing that a matchup with me and Munguia was very likely if we both continued to win in our matches,” Johnson said about his opponent. “That was three years ago. Watching him from then early 2018 to now, we’ve gotten a very good description of Munguia. His habits, his strengths and flaws. Looking at his progress from then and now, both me and my team thought it’s the right time to call the champion out.”

Johnson says he’s had a solid training camp up to this point, and has been able to get in a lot of conditioning and sparring, despite not being able to get into his usual pre-fight regimen due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Honestly I must say, I am truly blessed,” said Johnson. “I am in awe of my physical condition. Although I’ve been through much, so many surgeries, I have to thank God. I also want to thank the good doctors back home at PMH, Dr. Goud and Valentine Grimes, my physiotherapist Cordero Bonaby, and Autira Newbold, and also Bryan in Atlanta, Georgia, among others just to name a few.

“As far as the pandemic, I pray God’s peace to all who have suffered and lost loved ones and livelihoods due to it. As for me and my house and team, our approach to the pandemic is not to allow it to control and hinder us. Being more resourceful, innovative, resilient and creative are the initiatives we have taken.”

After his win over Quigley, Johnson was ranked No.8 in the World Boxing Council and No.15 in the International Boxing Federation.

Johnson also thanked his sponsors for helping him prepare for the fight: “I want to thank my wife, who basically manages me, Minister Frankie Campbell, my mom and dad, Apostle Phalmon Ferguson, Aquapure, K.S.Moses, Golden Eggs Farm, Transformation Landscape Developments, Home Fabrics and the entire Bahamas at large.

The event will be closed off to the public to follow California’s state restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic and will be broadcast live on DAZN on ESPN.
