John Chea #8 destroyed by fire

The popular John Chea #8 grocery store on Carmichael Road went up in flames on Tuesday morning, leading fire service personnel to summon help from the airport’s crash and fire services team.

According to Chief Superintendent of the Fire Services Department Walter Evans, the department received a call shortly before 11:00 a.m. that the food store was ablaze.

Evans said when officers arrived at the scene, the fire worsened, resulting in the temporary closure of the road leading to the store. He said that Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) was also contacted for electricity in the area to be temporarily turned off, to ensure the safety of his firefighters.

Two females were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation but remained responsive.

Chief Supt. Evans said the cause of the fire is not clear, but investigations continue.
