Immigration apprehends 23 foreign nationals over the weekend

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – In its continued effort to crack down on persons who are residing in The Bahamas illegally, the Department of Immigration apprehended a total of 23 foreign nationals over the weekend in New Providence and on the island of Eleuthera.

The Department of Immigration said a total of 11 Haitian nationals and one Jamaican national was arrested in the capital on Friday, February 15, during an ongoing joint operation between law enforcement officers of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and the Bahamas Immigration Department.

The arrests took place at various locations throughout New Providence, Immigration said.

Also last Friday, Immigration said a Haitian male was arrested at the Lynden Pindling International Airport shortly after disembarking a Bahamasair inbound flight from Matthew Town, Inagua.

Also at the airport, in a separate incident, a Jamaican national was arrested after it was found that he overstayed the time given to him by an Immigration Officer.

The Immigration Department also made arrests last Friday on the island of Eleuthera.

Immigration said on Friday, February 15, Officers of the Eleuthera district of the Department of Immigration conducted an island-wide apprehension exercise in which a total of nine Haitian nationals were arrested and later transported to New Providence where they are being housed at the Carmichael Road Detention Centre.

Immigration said it is anticipated that all persons will appear before the magistrate court sometime this week after further processing.

“We wish to remind the general public that we are committed to carrying out the mandates of our agency to combat illegal migration, by establishing effective border control management to ensure compliance with the Statute Laws of our Country,” the Immigration statement concluded.
