“I’m guilty”

One guilty plea, as two inmates caught up in escape plot

Two male inmates alleged to have hatched a plot to escape from the Bahamas Department of Corrections (BDOC) recently, were arraigned in Magistrate Court Thursday in connection with a failed escape attempt this week.

Mario Taylor, 36, and Fred Lifaite, 45, stood before Magistrate Kara Turnquest-Deveaux and were both charged with attempted escape and causing damage.

Prosecutors claim that it was shortly before 1:00 p.m. on Monday August, 6, when prison officers foiled a plot by two inmates, following a routine check of a male dormitory.

Prosecutors allege that officers found a hole in the ceiling above one of the cells.

Taylor pleaded guilty to both charges and was sentenced to three years on the attempted escape charge and two years for the damage charge. Taylor’s sentences are to run concurrently.

Lifaite pleaded not guilty to both charges and was remanded to the BDOC until October 4, when he is set to stand trial.
