NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Executives of The Bahamas, Hotel, Catering and Allied Workers Union (BHCAWU) met Wednesday with Minister of Tourism and Aviation, Dionisio D’Aguilar, to address their outstanding concerns.
According to the union’s president, Darrin Woods, the meeting was ‘cordial’. He said while the minister said he wanted to remain neutral, he did commit to looking into the concerns expressed by the union like access to their members on the job and new shift orders.
Also referring to the meeting as fruitful, Woods said they will wait to see whether the minister is able to secure a resolution for the union.
Yesterday’s meeting comes after several failed negotiations, but particularly after Third Vice President of the union, Suelynn Stuart, claimed that she went on Atlantis’ property on May 29 to speak with union members regarding changes to the housekeeping department at the Cove and Reef, and she was allegedly stopped by hotel security.
Woods also expressed on Wednesday that hotel employees will not strike as the union continues to negotiate with the Bahamas Hotel Employers Association for a new industrial agreement.
Talks are expected to resume among stakeholders in mid-July.
