NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The opening of all public schools has been pushed back a week with classes now expected to resume on Monday, January 7, 2019 as opposed to the originally slated date of Wednesday, January 2.

Eyewitness News Online understands that the change comes after Bahamas Union of Teachers president Belinda Wilson protested the original opening date of January 2, claiming it would be too early.

In a statement issued Thursday, education officials said to celebrate hardworking teachers and administrators, the ministry saw it fit to extend the holiday by five days.

Education minister Jeffery Lloyd thanked the unions for their cooperation and participation.
