ELEUTHERA, BAHAMAS — The Glass Window Bridge on Eleuthera closed at 7 p.m. this evening, according to island officials, who advised motorists and other road users that the closure was due to strong sea surge, the result of Hurricane Dorian.

“The bridge will reopen only when the weather permits,” officials said.

“Please stay away from the area of the bridge until the all-clear is given.”

Dorian, a dangerous and powerful Category 4 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour was 158 miles northeast of Governor’s Harbour as of 3 p.m. today.

In March 2018, five people were severely injured as they attempted to cross the bridge, which was closed at the time due to high sea surges.

Two of the victims had to be airlifted to New Providence.

That month, American Jonathon Brussow, 19, was also swept into the sea at the Queen’s Bath, south of the Glass Window Bridge.

A wave reportedly hit the 19-year-old and another man, causing them to fall into the water.

Brussow’s body was later recovered in waters in the area of Sand Pit.

Hurricane Dorian, a dangerous and powerful Category 4 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour was 158 miles northeast of Governor’s Harbour as of 3 p.m. today. It is expected to impact Abaco on Sunday and Grand Bahama Sunday night, through Monday.

The storm is expected to produce life-threatening storm surges, devastating hurricane force winds, and heavy torrential downpour that could cause flash floods.
