New airport expected to cost $13.5 million
NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The government is one step closer to redeveloping the Deadman’s Cay Airport in Long Island.
Long Island MP Adrian Gibson announced last night that the government will sign a contract today for phase one of the redevelopment of the airport and the reconstruction of the Newton Cay Bridge.
He said Minister of Public Works Desmond Bannister was in Long Island for the signing expected to take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Cultural/Regatta site in Salt Pond.
“We invite all Long Islanders to come out,” Gibson said. “Let us celebrate as we work to take Long Island to higher heights and a brighter future. See you there.”
The construction of the new airport is expected to cost $13.5 million.
During his national address in May, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said the construction of the airport was due to commence in the 2019/2020 budget period.
Gibson has long lobbied for an upgraded airport for Long Island, saying the airport would facilitate an economic boost to the island that is long overdue.
The government released the request for proposals and requests for quotations for the architectural and engineering consulting services for the new Deadman’s Cay Airport.
The tender documents called for a redeveloped and extended runway and apron design, new airport terminal design and a crash fire rescue building for the settlement of Deadman’s Cay.
