Five union representatives from the Grand Lucayan Resort in Grand Bahama made their way to the capital Wednesday to witness the government’s tabling of the resolution for the purchase of the Grand Lucayan Resort.
Union president Michelle Dorsett told Eyewitness News that employees who spent decades working for the property are anxious for the government’s journey to revive the resort – injecting new life into the economy of Grand Bahama.
The union representatives asserted their full support of the resolution.
“For years Hutchinson Whampoa didn’t check for us and they didn’t check for us,” she said.
“We still have outstanding matters which are pending and therefore the burden is on the government. We have to now rely on government now to see us through on this whole motion.
“Some of us have been there for 16, 18, 21 years and therefore Hutchinson has not been checking so this is a historical change what the government is doing because Grand Bahama needs to be revived.”
Dorsett explained that success of the entire project will be life-changing for residents on the embattled island.
“Well it means a lot for employees. It gives them the opportunity to decide if they want to now go out and be entrepreneurs or to stay,” she said.
“It also means that this will be a life-changing process for the entire community.”
Government returns to the Lower Chamber Thursday morning to table the resolution.
