Florence not a threat to The Bahamas

Bahamians abroad issued safety warning

While the Country’s Chief Meteorologist Basil Dean notes the country is in the clear of feeling a direct impact of Category 4 Hurricane Florence, he says the odds may be stacked against us in relation to this year’s hurricane season, as he explains the probability is high in being hit by at least just one hurricane considering the movement of 4 tropical systems through the Atlantic Ocean.

“We have three named systems travelling Isaac, Elaine, and Florence,” Dean explained.

“Florence is a very powerful hurricane it’s a category 4.  We’re expecting winds of over 140 mph, but we don’t expect any direct impact.”

Florence is set to travel between The Bahamas and Bermuda this week and while it’s not expected to make a direct impact to the Bahamas, Dean notes it’s expected to bring heavy rainfall and high tides of up to 8-12 ft. to the country starting as early as tomorrow.

A warning for Bahamians travelling to the southern states, specifically Georgia, and the Carolinas has also been issued.

Director of the National Emergency and Management Agency (NEMA) Captain Stephen Russel also noted Bahamians should take advantage of the agency’s recovery programme and take extreme caution throughout the remainder of the hurricane season.

Meantime, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a warning to all Bahamians residing in the areas to impacted by Hurricane Florence.

The statement read as follows:

The Bahamas is monitoring the path of Hurricane Florence.  All Bahamians in Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina and others in likely path of Hurricane Florence should take all necessary precautions and abide by the security measures put in place by local authorities.  If information is needed, persons should contact the Consular Offices in Washington, DC and Atlanta, Georgia.
