Few arrests made at New Year’s Day parade

CCTV helped police to surveil Bay & Shirley Streets

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Aside from a number of minor arrests made during the 2019 New Year’s Day Junkanoo Parade, officers of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) confirmed that it was a quiet night for police.

Anthony Ferguson, Commissioner of Police, RBPF, told Eyewitness News Online ahead of both the Boxing Day and New Year’s Day parades that the RBPF would be out in massive numbers to ensure that parade attendees felt safe.

In keeping with his word, Commissioner Ferguson reconfirmed on Tuesday morning that police officers saturated both Bay and Shirley Streets in an effort to deter criminal activity from disrupting the cultural event.

“Things are going very well here this morning. We are committed to ensure that people enjoy a safe parade and they are doing just that,” the police commissioner said.

The RBDF surveillance of the New Year’s Day parade was once again assisted by Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), according to Commissioner Ferguson.

“Just before we came down to walk the parade route this morning we were monitoring the activity on Bay and Shirley Streets through CCTV,” he said.

“It is a great support to law enforcement because we cannot be everywhere at every point in time and so we use this as an asset within the force.

“Law enforcement organizations use this technology around the world, and we are no different here, and will continue to use it to advance the RBPF.”
