Family gravely concerned for missing 12-year-old girl

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On December 14, 2018, 12-year-old Yolanda Mericidian left her Englerston home to head to school at CH Reeves. To date, six weeks later, Yolanda’s distraught family members are still holding out hope that she is alive and will return home safely.

After realizing that her daughter was in fact missing, Natasha Jean, a mother of five, visited the local police station and the Central Detective Unit to file a missing person’s report.

Following this, police released a flyer and statement asking for the public’s assistance in locating the minor.

Yolanda graduated from Centreville Primary last June 2018.

On Thursday, feeling depressed with nowhere else to turn, Yolanda’s mother and the Chief Guidance Counselor at Centreville Primary School, Janet Hutchison, reached out to Eyewitness News Online to appeal to the public for assistance.

“If she is being held against her will, [then someone would have placed] fear in her life not to come home; but her mother, family and our school family are concerned about her,” Hutchison cried.

Yolanda’s mother, Natasha Jean said, “I’ve not seen Yolanda for a while, and I don’t know what is going on. Yolanda is a good girl, she does well in school, she listens to her parents. I’m very sad, I take care of Yolanda, I feed her and clothe her.”

Hutchison told Eyewitness News Online that Yolanda is not the type to run away from home.

She said since Yolanda’s disappearance, she along with staff members at the Centreville Primary School have been assisting with the search.

Hutchison said that after Yolanda’s mother made the police report, police officers have been doing frequent checks in the Englerston area.

Hutchison said that they are extremely concerned about the minor as she has no way of feeding herself.

“Somebody is either harboring her, or holding her hostage,” Hutchinson surmised. “We want Yolanda to know that she is loved and that we care for her.”

According to Royal Bahamas Police Force Chief Superintendent Solomon Cash, persons in the Englerston community have claimed to have spotted Yolanda. However, their search for the missing girl has not panned out and investigations are still ongoing.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force is encouraging the public to continue to look out for the minor and contact the Central Detective Unit at 1.242.502.9991 if they have any information on the whereabouts of  12-year-old Yolanda Mericidian.
