The Free National Movement (FNM), in particular, its health ministry is aiming to be open with the public about the issues the ministry faces according to Minister of Health Dr. Duane Sands.

“While it may not be comfortable, while it may not be pleasant,” Sandstold media earlier this week.

“The level of transparency we are seeking to bring at least to the Ministry of Health is I believe unprecedented.”

His comments came in response to an article in a local daily where the opposition’s spokesman on health matters, Senator Michael Darville reportedly said that Sands and the FNM government completely cancelled the health care plan left in place by the Christie administration.

The article reports that Darville mentioned that the former administration’s plan to fund health care in The Bahamas was carefully laid out and executed by their administration and that Sands will go down as one of the worst Ministers of Health in history.

The article said that Darville stated, “As the system collapses around Dr. Sands due to his own mismanagement, it does no good blaming the PLP. Simply fix the problem minister.”

In response to these comments, Sands said to media, “That is absolutely laughable.”

“What we are trying to do is actually let people know what is going on. Tell people what it is and what we are trying to do. This is not about looking backwards it’s about ‘let’s go on a journey together’.”

Sands said that they are moving a major plank of the health platform a little bit forward.

“I think notwithstanding the fact that we have massive challenges with healthcare in this country. One day at a time, one project time but letting people know exactly what the challenges are,” he said.
