Deputy Prime Minister, Peter Turnquest.

Some 50 per cent of annual revenue from the Customs Department is lost due to inefficiencies in the system, according to the country’s top financier.

The admission came from Deputy Prime Minister Peter Turnquest on Friday as he spoke to Rotarians.

Turnquest said, in an effort to force Bahamians to pay what is owed to the government, major changes will begin January 2018, including a completely automating collection system at the Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA).

According to Turnquest, penalties for lying of declaration forms will also be increased.
