Following weeks of environmental push back over a proposed development at Lighthouse Point in Eleuthera by Disney Cruise Lines, the company has officially presented a proposal to the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation (BCCEC), outlining the scope of work for the development.
The formal proposal comes following weeks of talks with residents on the island, who have vehemently opposed any development at the southern tip of the island.
The One Eleuthera Foundation and re-Earth Bahamas have both been at the forefront of arguments to rule out the mega development on the untouched pristine land where the lighthouse sits.
Sam Duncombe of re-Earth Bahamas on Friday recommended that Disney share the existing port at Princess Cay, Eleuthera and for the country to invest in more diverse models for development.
Lighthouse Point is a privately owned area where Disney is hoping to construct a new cruise port. The cruise liner has promised up to 120 jobs and other spin off employment opportunities.
While the details of the proposal have not been made public, environmentalist, including executives of the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) stressed that the development would decimate the environment, restrict access and has limited economic benefit.
Eyewitness News understands that meetings between all stakeholders are planned for this week with the BCCEC on the development.
