A fusion of British and African influences gathered at SLS Baha Mar resort to attend a Destination Caribbean event spotlighting Bahamian Culture on Monday.
Its second day’s breakfast education session provided an inside look into the culture and history of the country by former director of culture, heritage and entertainment of Ministry of Tourism and Aviation and founder of the educational organization, Arlene Nash Ferguson.
“We are less than 50 miles from North America and have the nerve to have our own culture,” Ferguson coyly stated.
Ferguson educated the attendees on how the laws of The Bahamas work including how the country’s resources have been taken advantage of.
“Bahamians have a love of tea which has grown in The Bahamas from it was a British colony, while music, food, medicine and more grow from its people’s African roots.
“This blending of cultures can be seen in the celebration of Bahamian Junkanoo – a national cultural festival of all-night dancing, music and decorative costumes that takes place each Christmas,”
President and Creative Director of Bahamas Destination Management Company Cacique International Shawn Sawyer outlined to the attendees why The Bahamas is an ideal meeting and incentive destination.
“The organization could help groups create memorable events in the country,” Sawyer added.
The company capped off the event with a generous donation of school supplies to the Children’s Emergency Hostel.
