NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On the heels of a stabbing incident at the C.C. Sweeting Senior High School on Monday, Minister of Education Jeff Lloyd on Tuesday sought to ease the concerns of the public regarding the safety of government schools.
Lloyd told media before heading to Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting that the public should not be worried because government schools are safe for students and teachers.
“I want to emphasize that our schools are safe for our students and teachers,” Lloyd stressed.
“I want to emphasize [that] wherever instances or threats of violence occur, they are immediately addressed, confronted and resolved so that we provide the safest environment for those who need to be on the campus.”
Yesterday police reported that shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday, an altercation occurred between two male students on the premises of a senior government school in the western district of New Providence, which resulted in one of the students being stabbed about the body.
Eyewitness News understands that the incident happened at the C.C. Sweeting Senior High School.
The injured student was reportedly transported to hospital and police have taken into custody a 17-year-old student of the school in connection with the incident.
Eyewitness News Online understands that the teen, who was celebrating his birthday on Monday, was allegedly stabbed once in the back causing his lung to collapse.
Asked about Monday’s stabbing incident at C.C. Sweeting, Lloyd said the matter is under investigation and he is awaiting a report to determine what action should be taken.
The student, according to police reports, is presently listed in stable condition.
