Delta Airlines makes ‘difficult’ decision to suspend GB and Abaco service

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Delta Airlines has suspended its service into Grand Bahama and Abaco, citing damage levied by Hurricane Dorian for the “difficult decision”.

Delta will suspend its seasonal service into Grand Bahama and yearly service into Marsh Harbour, according to a statement obtained by Eyewitness News Online.

The statement read: “As a result of the damage levied by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas in September, Delta has made the difficult decision to suspend its seasonal service to Grand Bahama International Airport (FPO) in Freeport and year-round service to Leonard Thompson International Airport (MHH) in Marsh Harbour.”

The airline continued: “Delta will continue to fly between the United States and the Bahamas via service to Nassau, available year-round from Atlanta and New York-JFK and seasonally from Boston, Detroit, Ft. Lauderdale, and Minneapolis-St. Paul.

“The airline will also continue to serve Exuma International Airport (GGT) year-round and North Eleuthera Airport (ELH) seasonally from Atlanta, with additional Saturday flying to both airports.”

The airline noted contributions to those affected by Hurricane Dorian in the US and in the Bahamas.

Delta contributed $500,000 to the American Red Cross and operated eight humanitarian flights, delivering more than 85,000 pounds of supplies and evacuating more than 500 survivors, according to the statement.

‘We will continue to evaluate additional opportunities to support the Bahamas as affected communities recover,” said Delta.

The Grand Bahama International Airport is expected to welcome its first international commercial flight post Dorian on this Friday.

Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said in Parliament last week that the Leonard M. Thompson International Airport in Marsh Harbour, which sustained substantial damage during Dorian in September, will reopen to international flights before the this weekend or soon thereafter.
