Power restored to Moore’s Island; Grand Cay grid sustained some damage
NASSAU, BAHAMAS — A completed assessment of the electrical infrastructure in Little Grand Cay, Abaco, has “yielded relatively positive news”, according to Bahamas Power and Light (BPL).
A team comprised BPL personnel andrepresentatives from Allen Exploration Walker’s Cay, which powered the island, determined that the cay’s electrical gridmadeitthroughHurricaneDorianin“relativelygoodcondition withsome damage, butnotasmuchasothercommunitiessuffered”.
BPL noted that thereisfoodandwater andtheclinic wasoperational.
It said Allen Exploration Walker’s Cay is expected to bring a larger team to do a more comprehensive assessment of Little Grand Cay.
That team is set to be on the ground tomorrow.
BPL also reported that power on Moore’s IslandhadbeenfullyrestoredsinceFridayevening.
Efforts to restorepowertothemainlandAbaco,beginning in thesouth.
The power provider said it will continue to update the public on ongoing efforts.
Abaco and Grand Bahama were pounded by Dorian, a Category 5 storm that brought up to 23 feet sea surges and winds of over 200 miles per hour in bursts.
The storm has displaced thousands, some of whom have relocated to shelters in New Providence and other Family Islands.
The death toll continues to climb, and was last confirmed at 52.
The timeline to restore power to both islands — a critical item in the immediate and long-term restoration process as residents begin to pick up the pieces — remains unclear.
On Friday, a team of 11 linesmen and other workers, as well as Acting Chief Operations Officer Ian Pratt landed in Marsh Harbour and reported damage at the Marsh Harbour Power Station was extensive.
Poles and trucks were shipped overnight to the island.
The team was expected to begin work on the line at Sandy Point in the south.
