Collegiate athletes shine at regional championships

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Some of the country’s premier track and field athletes turned in strong performances over the weekend at various indoor regional championships.

Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) junior Donovan Storr won the men’s 400-meters (m) in 47.68 seconds at the Southland Indoor Track and Field Championships. Also, at the same meet, the SLU team of Storr, Cliff Resias and Tahrike Jones finished second overall.

Ian Kerr won the men’s 200m dash at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 21.40 seconds for Adams State University. Also, on the track, Sasha Wells, from Oral Roberts University, won both the women’s 60m dash and 60m hurdles in 7.54 and 8.47 seconds respectively.

Krystal Mitchell highlighted the Central State women’s performances as she took first place in the 100m dash with a time of 12.36 seconds at the Columbus State Invitational.

On the field, Laquan Nairn, from the University of Arkansas, turned in a personal-best mark in the triple jump, earning a third-place finish with a leap of 16.03m at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships. At the Big Ten Championships, Jyles Etienne earned a bronze after breaking a U-M Indoor Track Building record with a height of 2.16m. Also, elite athlete Tamara Myers won the long jump with a leap of 6.53m at the 2019 Gibson McCook Relays in Jamaica.
