NASSAU, BAHAMAS- After being cancelled in 2020, the Caribbean Golf Classic is set to make a grand return in 2021.
One of the first regional sporting events for next year, the 25th Annual Caribbean Golf Classic is set for the picturesque golf course at the Casa de Campo Resort in La Romana, Dominican Republic. The five-day event, which is staged by the Caribbean Golf Association (CGA), is tentatively set for April 20-24, 2021.
Barring an aggressive return of the novel coronavirus, and the strengthening of local and foreign restrictions, The Bahamas is set to take part.
At the last championships, in 2019, in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, The Bahamas placed sixth overall in the George Noon Cup, given to the country with the most points overall. Winning that cup was Puerto Rico with 138 points. The Bahamas scored 81 overall points.
Once again, The Bahamas is expected to compete in all four divisions – the men will battle for the Robert Grell Trophy, the women will compete for the Jodi Munn-Barrow Trophy, and the mid amateurs and seniors will also be in action. Points will be awarded for individual and team play.
Golfers, through their respective federations, are encouraged to register by January 15, 2021, and registration can be done online at www.caribbeangolfassociation.com.
Globally, the sport of golf has been acknowledged as one of the safest sports in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to event organizers, all safety protocols will be in full effect, and golfers and team officials can be assured of safe and secured surroundings.
“Our goal is to have our family of Caribbean golfers celebrate with us during the 25th CGA Classic,” said CGA Operations Coordinator Julia Vaz.
Despite the restrictions that are currently in place, organizers feel confident that the event will come off without a hitch. “Nothing will be spared to make this 2021 event the best ever. According to reports, the Caribbean Golf Association and Casa de Campo are planning a milestone celebration in recognition of the silver jubilee anniversary event.

This year’s event was set for May 19-23 in La Romana but had to be cancelled due to the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The last regional golf event to be held in The Bahamas was the 2019 Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships, which took place at the Albany Golf Course in southwestern New Providence. The Bahamas finished third in that tournament behind Puerto Rico and Jamaica.
