BREAKING: Large fire rages in Abaco

MARSH HARBOUR, ABACO – Officials are battling a large blaze in Abaco, Chief Superintendent Walter Evans has confirmed.

Evans, officer-in-charge of Fire Services, told Eyewitness News Online he could not provide further details as he was working to get a team to the site to tackle the blaze.

He could not confirm the location of the fire at the time; however, videos circulated on social media depicted a section of the Pigeon Peas shantytown.

“All I can tell you at this time is that there is a large fire in Abaco,” Evans said.

This is the third reported fire on Abaco since deadly Hurricane Dorian laid waste to portions of the island, flattening major shantytowns on September 1-3.

On Wednesday, a small portion of the Peas caught on fire around 9pm.

At the time, Jack Thompson, redevelopment coordinator for Abaco, said the fire had been 98 percent extinguished nearly two hours later.

On Thursday, police reportedly discovered a pile of debris burning in the neighboring Mudd shantytown shortly before 10pm.

The officers successfully extinguished the fire with the help of volunteer firefighters, according to a police statement.
