BREAKING: Govt. drops 2019 IAAF World Relays

The Bahamas Government has confirmed moments ago that it will not host next year’s IAAF World Relays.

The following statement was released by the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Culture:

The Government of The Bahamas has notified the President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) that it is unable to host the 2019 International Association of Athletics Federations World Relays.

The Bahamas has been privileged to have hosted the inaugural International Association of Athletics Federations World Relays in 2014, and the two subsequent editions of the games in 2015 and 2017.

Our partnership with the IAAF in hosting the World Relays afforded a small island nation the opportunity to demonstrate its capacity to successfully plan and host this prestigious international sporting event. It has been an honour for people of The Bahamas to share its warmth and hospitality, having welcomed the IAAF and world-class athletes to three exciting editions of the World Relays.

At this juncture, and having regard to the Government’s commitment to fiscal discipline, and the commitment being sought from the Government for the event, the Government has determined that it is unable to host the event.

The Government of The Bahamas maintains and has communicated to the IAAF its continued interest in national and international sporting initiatives, and wishes the IAAF every success in its endeavors.
