Several local junior athletes have already taken to the track in Tampere, Finland at the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) Under-20 World Championships, however, none managed to make it to a final.

Joel Johnson, Adrian Curry, Jaida Knowles, Oscar Smith and Denvaughn Whymns have had the opportunity to represent the country on the biggest stage in junior athletics so far.

Johnson and Curry opened the competition in the boys’ 100-metre (m) dash. Johnson qualified for the semifinal round with his time of 10.34 seconds in the opening heat, however, what appeared to be a hamstring injury, kept him from competing in the second round. As for Curry, he was sixth in heat one of the 100 in 10.70 seconds.

In the girls’ 100, Knowles was eighth in semifinal two in 11.68 seconds. Her opening time of 11.71 seconds allowed her to qualify for the second round. As for Smith, he was seventh in the semifinal of boys’ 110m hurdles with a time of 15.31 seconds. Whymns clocked a personal best of 13.91 seconds in a fifth-place finish in heat two. However, the time wasn’t fast enough to qualify for the next round.

Today, Johnson is scheduled to compete in the opening heats of the 200, depending on fitness. And over on the field, Jyles Etienne and Kyle Alcine will compete in the opening round of the high jump.
