Associated Press called US presidential race for Biden today

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis offered congratulations to United States President-Elect Joe Biden after he was declared the winner of the US presidency by The Associated Press.

Minnis also offered his regards to Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris, who made history, becoming the first woman of color to be elected as vice president of the United States.

“The Bahamas and the United States have enjoyed long-standing, warm, friendly and historic relations,” Minnis said in a letter to president-elect Biden.

“I extend my very best wishes to you for a successful administration and I am very confident that the warm and friendly relations existing between our two governments and peoples will not only continue but will be further strengthened.”

Opposition Leader Philip Brave Davis and former Prime Minister Perry Christie also offered well-wishes to the administration on their victory.

Davis applauded the American people for voting in record numbers and for “re-affirming the democratic ideals of Thomas Jefferson, and recognising that the will of the people has been freely and fully expressed”.

He said the party looks forward to working with the new administration “on a number of national and regional issues of mutual concern and interest.”

Christie took to social media with the stream of global leaders saying, “Congratulations to my friend President-Elect Joe Biden on becoming the 46th President of the United States”.

The Associated Press called the race for Biden today, after four days of counting votes since the country’s election on November 3.

Biden took an insurmountable lead in Pennsylvania on Saturday, winning the 20 electoral votes in the Keystone State, and surpassing the 270 majority vote needed to win the presidency. According to The Associated Press, Biden finished with 290 electoral votes.

Up until late Saturday evening, President Donald Trump refused to concede the election, threatening further legal action on ballot counting.
