Bahamas captures second consecutive CARIFTA swimming title

Despite the overall scores being close on opening day, Team Bahamas put on a dominant display over the final three days of competition to capture its second consecutive Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) Swimming title in Kingston, Jamaica Tuesday.

The Bahamas ended the junior regional meet with 789 total points, more than 100 points ahead of Guadeloupe who came second with 608 points. Host country Jamaica was third with 607.5, Trinidad and Tobago was fourth with 576, and the Cayman Islands rounded out the top five with 502.5 points.

Like the past three days, Izaak Bastian had another strong day in the pool yesterday, closing the games out in grand style. Bastian set a new meet record in the 100-meter (m) breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:03.12. Bastian also captured gold in the 50 free in 23.25 seconds.

Lilly Higgs and Victoria Russell came first and second in the 15-17 girls event, finishing the race in 1:12.65 and 1:14.87 respectively.

Lamar Taylor added another gold medal in the 13-14 boys 50 free, finishing in 24.27 seconds. Roman Taylor snagged a bronze in the event in 25.55 seconds.

And Peter Morley picked up a silver medal in the 200m backstroke in 2:13.27.

The Bahamas also closed out strong in the 200 free relay, winning gold in 1:36.86.
