Baha Mar to host Pink Flamingo Invitational

NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – Baha Mar, the newest resort destination in The Bahamas, announced on Thursday, December 2, the first-ever Pink Flamingo Invitational, an unprecedented college tennis tournament taking place at the Baha Mar Racquet Club from Thursday, January 9 to Sunday, January 12, 2020.

Top-ranked women’s tennis teams from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Florida, University of Texas and the University of Miami will compete in the four-day ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) sanctioned invitational to take home the inaugural Pink Flamingo Cup.

The tournament will feature both singles and doubles matches for an elite showcase of collegiate tennis between four of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) top teams, which collectively include 12 nationally-ranked players. Matches will take place across Baha Mar Racquet Club’s nine courts, including hard, har-tru clay and grass surfaces. University fans and alumni, along with boosters, family members, friends and resort guests, will have the opportunity to watch college stars and future pros compete in the beautiful destination of The Bahamas.

“We are thrilled to host four iconic college tennis programs at Baha Mar’s inaugural Pink Flamingo Invitational,” said Karin Salinas, senior vice president, marketing, Baha Mar. “This beautiful resort destination is the ultimate getaway for sports enthusiasts and avid tennis fans, and we’re honored to showcase world-class athletics and bring inspiring talent to the islands of The Bahamas.”

Along with star players, the four competing universities boast legendary coaches who have won a total of six NCAA National Championships between them, as well as led their teams to multiple Top 10 finishes.

Under the direction of head coaches Stella Sampras Webster (UCLA), Roland Thornqvist (University of Florida), Howard Joffe (University of Texas) and Paige Yaroshuk-Tews (University of Miami), all four universities are expected to be ranked in the Top 20 when Oracle ITA releases team rankings in January 2020.

Since the resort’s opening in April 2017, Baha Mar has fast become a favorite destination for collegiate and professional athletes, from professional and NCAA basketball to PGA golf tournaments.

Most recently, in November 2019, Baha Mar hosted the top names in professional tennis including the 15-year-old American tennis superstar Coco Gauff, and tennis legends Andy Roddick, Mark Knowles, Tommy Haas, Bob Bryan, James Blake and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario at the inaugural Baha Mar Cup, a fundraising tournament that raised $100,000 for Hurricane Dorian relief in The Bahamas.

Baha Mar’s impressive collection of athletic offerings includes Royal Blue, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, The Baha Mar Racquet Club, and state-of-the-art basketball courts, drawing some of today’s most prominent athletes.
