The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) ratified the team that will represent The Bahamas at the 2018 Penn Relays this week at the University of Pennsylvania (UP) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The team competing is almost identical to the athletics squad that represented the country at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, earlier this month.
The men’s 4×400 meter (m) relay team is made up by Michael Mathieu, Stephen Newbold, Ramon Miller, Teray Smith and Alonzo Russell. In women’s action, four of the country’s premier sprinters will compete in the women’s sprint medley.
Katrina Seymour will run the 400, Tynia Gaither will run the 200, while Sheniqua Ferguson and Tamara Myers will run 100m each. No one from the BAAA responded when asked about the absence of Steven Gardiner and Shaunae Miller-Uibo from the team.
Along with the elite athletes, several local high school teams will also be competing in the prestigious meet.
Teams traveling for the event include Saint Augustine’s College (SAC), St. John’s College and Grand Bahama’s Bishop Michael Eldon. It is also expected that the University of The Bahamas (UB) will have some representation in the collegiate division.
The Penn Relays (also Penn Relays Carnival) is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States, hosted annually since April 21, 1895, by UP at Franklin Field.
In 2012, there were 116 events run at the meet. More athletes run in the Penn Relays than in any other track and field meet in the world.
