It’s been tough sledding so far for team Bahamas at the International Association of Athletic Federations’ (IAAF) Indoor World Championships in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Two of the five local athletes that traveled for the games were in action yesterday in the men’s high jump.
Donald Thomas and Jamal Wilson finished sixth and ninth respectively in the event. Thomas ended up in a three-way tie for sixth with a best leap of 2.20 meters (m) along with Maksim Nedasekau (Belarus) and Yu Wang (China). As for Wilson, he also finished in a three-way tie with a best leap of 2.20m.
Thomas cleared 2.20 on his first attempt, while Wilson did it on his third attempt.
Alonzo Russell is up next for team Bahamas in the men’s 400. He’ll be competing in the third heat out of lane four. Russell ran a season best 46.38 seconds in January at the Clemson Invitational. He’ll be followed by Devynne Charlton in the 60m hurdles. Charlton competes in the third heat out of lane eight. She ran a season’s best 8.05 seconds in February in South Bend, United States. Warren Fraser will close things out for team Bahamas in the men’s 60m dash on Sunday.
Over 600 athletes from 144 nations will compete in 26 events over the course of the competition. This is the second time that the Indoor World Championships is being held in Birmingham, as the city previously hosted the games back in 2003.
