Authorities cautioned women about lingering in their vehicles late at night
NASSAU, BAHAMAS- An armed man held a woman at gunpoint while she sitting in her car on Yamacraw Beach Drive on Saturday night, police reported.
The woman is one of nearly a dozen women who have been robbed at gunpoint since July 31.
The gunman robbed her of a cell phone and her blue Nissan Note.
The incident took place around 10 p.m.
Police said the vehicle had the license plate: AT9621
Police appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
Last Thursday, an armed man robbed three men and a woman were sitting on the park in Colony Village around 9 p.m.
The suspect got away with cash and a number of cell phones.
Between July 30, 2019 and August 3, 2019, nine women were robbed at gunpoint.
In several of those incidents, the victims were robbed on their vehicles.
In nearly all of the armed robberies, the women were either just arriving home and remained in their vehicle or were just leaving a residence.
“Stop delaying yourself on the outside when you are coming from your car to your house,” Chief Superintendent Solomon Cash told Eyewitness News Online.
“If you are going inside, just go inside the residence rather than [lingering] around looking for items in your car and that sort of stuff.
“In addition to that; if you are carrying valuables and you are arriving home, I would advise you to alert someone who is home who would be on the lookout; once they pull up home, somebody would be there, present, to observe what is going on in the surroundings.”
Last month, police also reported a trend of individuals being robbed while walking late at night, particularly in the south and southwestern portions of the island.
In response to both trends, Cash said police have taken steps to increase police presence and saturation in relevant areas.
