Victim’s grandchildren rescued from the water

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — An American woman who was swimming with her two grandchildren in waters off Gilliam Bay Beach, Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, drowned Wednesday, according to authorities, who said she was caught in a rip current.

The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m.

According to authorities, the two boys were rescued.

The woman, whose identity was not released, was brought to shore where a resident performed CPR.

Emergency medical services and a nurse from the government clinic also assisted on scene.

However, the woman could not be resuscitated and died on scene.

Police said they were investigating the matter.

This is the second reported drowning in the country this week.

On Tuesday, a young man drowned in Hatchet Bay, Eleuthera.

Police said shortly before 6 p.m., a group of young men were walking along the water’s edge in Hatchet bay when they decided to jump into the water.

One of the young men called out for help when he surfaced, but “became submerged a second time”

Authorities said the victim was eventually retrieved from the water and transported to the community clinic on the island.

Police said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
