28 people cited for breach of COVID-19 order

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Police cited 28 people gathered at an eatery on New Providence for breach of the COVID-19 order yesterday.

Assistant Superintendent Audley Peters said officers from the Operations Unit were alerted to a group of people gathered at an eatery situated on Second Street shortly after 5pm.

Peters said: “On the officer’s arrival at the establishment, they observed persons on the inside not adhering to the COVID-19 order. As a result, the officers cited the manager for hosting a social gathering and 27 patrons were cited for attending a social gathering and failing to practice social distancing.”

In other crime news, two men were arrested for undisclosed quantities of suspected marijuana in two separate incidents yesterday.

The first incident took place sometime around 1.30pm at Johnson Alley off Wulff Road, according to Peters.

“While there, the officers executed a search warrant in the presence of the occupant,” he continued.

“The police search dog was deployed, a short time later the dog alerted its handler to a grassy area outside the home. On close examination of the area, the officer discovered a black plastic bag that contained suspected marijuana. A male suspect was arrested and taken into custody.”

In the second incident, officers from the Operations Unit observed the occupant of a vehicle who aroused their suspicion while on mobile patrol on West End Avenue sometime around 2pm.

“The vehicle was stopped, a field search was conducted,” Peters said.

“As a result, a quantity of suspected marijuana was discovered in the vehicle. A male suspect was arrested in connection with this incident. He is expected to be formally charged before the Magistrate’s Court.”

Investigations into both matters are ongoing.

How silly is it to still be wasting tax dollars on marijuana arrests in 2020? The country, it’s citizens, and the economy are hurting and y’all want to lock people up for weeds.
